Age- & Dementia-Friendly Smart Show Room
The Age- and Dementia-Friendly Smart Showroom is a resource for older adults who want to age in place. Adults and their families can visit the Showroom to see what technology is available to help them stay in their homes longer.
Smart Showroom Products
Grand Appliance, located in Marion, Iowa, generously donated various Samsung Smart Appliances, including an oven and stove; stove hood with fire extinguisher; refrigerator; microwave; and a dishwasher — all of which can be controlled by an app on a cell phone.
Utilizing the smart features of these appliances may allow an older adult or a person living with dementia to remain independent in their homes longer. Some products even allow family members to check in from afar, ensuring their loved ones are safe and their needs met.
The Showroom also features samples of chairs and tables specially designed to be the right height with the correct-size arms; cleaning devices, such as a robotic vacuum and mop; and examples of knobs and handles that work best for older adults and those living with dementia.
Effect of Smart Appliances & Furniture
Smart appliances – like refrigerators, cooktops, ovens and dishwashers – can accommodate additional needs for older adults aging in place. For instance, some appliances can be controlled or viewed from a mobile app; provide alerts and reminders; and operate using voice assistance.
Furniture featuring arms, easy storage options, and easy-to-clean materials are more accessible and safer for older adults. Additionally, easy-grip handles and knobs can improve the functionality and accessibility of your home.
High-tech cleaning appliances – like robotic vacuums and mops – are not only a time-saver, but can operate on pre-set schedules, controlled remotely, and can ensure clean and safe environments.
